Running an Agric Business without Loans in Nigeria

We were able to get a virtual sit down with Gladys Etema, Owner of Etema Farms and Agro Consultancy Limited, Abuja which specializes in farming quality food and cash crops in Nigeria. She shares her experience in running an Agric Business in Nigeria even without loan support from the Government.

Describe your business to us and what it entails.

Etema Farms and Agro Consultancy Limited is an agricultural business that specializes in farming quality food crops like maize, beans, etc, and vegetables like tomatoes, peppers, Chinese cabbage, and more.

We sell our farm produce and can source the ones we don’t have to satisfy our esteemed customers. We are also into agricultural training and consultations to ensure other farmers have good knowledge of the farming profession, produce good quality food, and are able to make a profit from their farms also.

Tell us a little about how you started and what inspired the idea for your business.

I come from a line of farmers, when we go to the village, my grandmother will always take me and my cousins along with her to the farm and we would assist her, even though we went there to play more than work (Lol) I started developing interest and love for farming, sometimes she uses the proceeds from her farm to buy us things we liked and  I started growing in love with farming, when it was time for University, I choose to study Agricultural Economics and in my second year, I was already sure I was going into farming and the name of the farm would be Etema farms.

How did you secure capital to start the business? Did you get any loan from the bank or support from the government?

Like I mentioned earlier, I have been into farming professionally for about 6 years, those 6years have been spent working for others on their farms, so Etema farm is just starting, so to say, we are just about 2 months but we started the farm with my personal savings. I started putting the farm together little by little over the past months but so far we haven’t taken any loans. Nor gotten any support from the Government.

When did you realize you needed some help with organizing your business finances and how has Dillali Helped you achieve this?

As I mentioned earlier, it’s a new business, and I got to know about Dillali almost a month ago through Mr. Ibrahim Bashir, I have registered on the app but I am yet to do much on it, hope to start soon, but after going through the app and reading the reviews of the existing customers, I am sure it will be a tool that will help organize my business, especially as our business is growing and customer base increasing.

Where do you see your business and the agriculture industry in the next 5 years and any advice for those who want to start an agribusiness?

I see Etema Farms and Agro consultancy Limited being a household name within and outside Nigeria in 5 years. I see the farm producing good quality and healthy food for many people in the nation, organizing training for many farmers to solve their farming challenges, and inspiring more people to go into farming especially young people so that the agricultural sector can be more developed and there will be enough food to eat and even export.
